The spectre is said to be Mary (who also went by the name of Polly), a young prostitute who was murdered at her pitch at the end of World War Two.

The story goes thats during VE celebrations on the 8th May 1945, Mary was enjoying the extra income due to the party atmosphere around the city. In the early morning hours, Mary was finishing her shift when after refusing a client was violently strangled and immediately died.
