The Short Street Spectre.
Various sightings have been reported over the years of a ghost that haunts Leicester’s famous Short Street.
Mary The High Kicker.
The spectre is said to be Mary (who also went by the name of Polly), a young prostitute who was murdered at her pitch at the end of World War Two.
The story goes thats during VE celebrations on the 8th May 1945, Mary was enjoying the extra income due to the party atmosphere around the city. In the early morning hours, Mary was finishing her shift when after refusing a client was violently strangled and immediately died.
There was no witness to the crime and Mary was not found until after sunrise.
The Police stopped investigating after a few weeks with their only lead being a sailor, who was one of Mary’s regulars. He was on shore leave at the time and was the last person to see her alive.
Sightings Of Mary.
There has been various reports of Mary on Short Street, even being seen throughout the day. Most of the reports are consistent with an attractive women walking past them with outdated clothing and makeup with dark bruising around her throat.
When they looked back to double check she had disappeared.
